Subject: How do large investors think about mega trends and act upon them

Date: 21 July 2025

  • In a mega trend you only make money when you invest in the growth phase
  • To identify the growth phase, there are markers such as technology curve, the cost curve, behavioural shifts, etc. All these markers tell us which way the wind is blowing, how strong it is, has the mass adoption reached that inflection point, which should result in a G-curve kind of growth phase.
  • A mega trend can last 20, 30, 50 years but the phase of making money will not be that long – will be a 5, 7, 10 year phase.
  • A mega trend can be different for different sectors. It can also spread across a number of sectors. For example, energy transition is spread across a number of sectors and not restricted to only solar energy. Within the mega trend, not every sector hits the inflection point at the same time.
  • The focus should be that in the next 5 years, which are the technologies which will reach that inflection point; those are the ones that one should invest in.
  • One mega trend is in the financial sector. Any business which is in and around the capital markets should do well over the next 10 to 20 years for these reasons: Indian economy is getting formalised. The economy is also getting financialized, the percentage of savings is falling. Large investors are gravitating from physical assets to financial assets. Any financial product which is fee based will see a large tail wind over the next 10-20 years. Support services in the financial sector such as depositories, market infra companies and exchanges will also do well.
  • Another mega trend is in the pharma sector in the Contract Development and Manufacturing Organization (CDMO) and Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) space. In this space, the innovators have gotten comfortable with certain Indian companies and are willing to now move from giving them just pilot products to commercial projects.
