For One More Day

by Mitch Albom

  • When your parents die, you feel like instead of going into every fight with backup, you are going into every fight alone.

” When he went blundering back to God

His songs half written, his work half done,

Who knows what paths his bruised feet trod

What hills of peace or pain he won?

I hope God smiled and took his hand,

And said, “Poor truant, passionate fool!

Life’s book is hard to understand:

Why couldst thou not remain at school?” — a poem by Charles Hanson Towne

  • Loneliness seemed to squat in my lungs and crush all but my most minimal breathing.
  • I was going to end my life where I began it. Blundering back to God. Simple as that.
  • I caught his gaze, two dull, dark eyes, and I thought to myself, “This is the last face I will see on earth.”
  • When you want to die, you are spared. Who can explain that?
  • What is it about childhood that never lets you go, even when you’re so wrecked it’s hard to believe you ever were a child?
  • When you’re young, you nest in your parents’ plans, not your own.
  • I adored my mother the way that boys adore their mothers while taking them for granted. She smacked me. She scolded me. She punished me. But she loved me. She had a bottomless well of love for me.
  • Kids chase the love that eludes them, and for me, that was my father’s love. He kept it tucked away, like papers in a briefcase. And I kept trying to get in there.
  • I think what you notice most when you haven’t been home in a while is how much the trees have grown around your memories.
  • “Mom?” I whispered. I hadn’t said it in so long. When death takes your mother, it steals that word forever.
  • I don’t know what it is about food your mother makes for you, especially when it’s something that anyone can make – pancakes, meatloaf, tuna salad – but it carries a certain taste of memory.
  • Trees spend all day looking up at God.
  • When a lost loved one appears before you, it’s your brain that fights it, not your heart.
  • Sometimes kids what you to hurt the way they hurt.
  • When someone is in your heart, they’re never truly gone. They can come back to you, even at unlikely times.
  • “Your mom. She died.” They are different than other words. They are too big to fit in your ears. They belong to some strange, heavy, powerful language that pounds away at the side of your head, a wrecking ball coming at you again and again, until finally, the words crack a hole large enough to fit inside your brain. And in so doing, they split you apart.
  • When you look at your mother, you are looking at the purest love you’ll ever know.
  • You need to keep people close. You need to give them access to your heart.
